Frequently Asked Questions.
Quick answers to what most customers ask before ordering a dump body.
Should I go with Godwin or a custom Nichols-built dump body?
Both are good — depends on what you need. Godwin is a proven brand-name body with standard sizes (9-16 ft) and faster turnaround since they come pre-built. Great for fleet operators who want a known quantity. Nichols-built is the way to go if you need a custom length (anything from 8 to 24 feet), specific side heights, aluminum instead of steel, or special add-ons. Call us and we'll talk through which path fits your job.
What's the difference between scissor and telescopic hoists?
Telescopic hoists mount at the front of the body and extend in stages — they're the standard for most contractor-grade bodies. Scissor hoists sit under the bed and lift the whole thing more evenly — they're better for longer bodies (12-16 ft) and applications where you want a low-profile look. We'll recommend whichever fits your job best.
Electric over Hydraulic or PTO Hydraulic — which is better?
Electric over Hydraulic (12V DC) is best for smaller trucks and lighter dumping needs. It runs off your battery, so no PTO needed. PTO Hydraulic runs off your transmission — more powerful, more consistent, and the standard for medium-duty and bigger trucks that dump often. We'll match the power source to your truck and how often you'll be dumping.
How long does a dump body install take?
Standard install is 1-2 weeks. That includes mounting the body, installing the hoist, hydraulic system, electrical, hookups for the tailgate, and any tarp systems or add-ons you ordered. Custom builds take a few weeks longer since we're fabricating from scratch.
Can you build a body with extra-tall sides?
Yes — that's one of the big advantages of going Nichols-built. We can fabricate any side height you need. Standard is 24-36 inches, but we've built bodies with 48+ inch sides for landscape contractors and mulch haulers who need more volume. Just tell us what you're hauling and we'll spec the height.
Do you offer dump bodies in aluminum?
Yes. Custom Nichols-built dump bodies are available in steel or aluminum. Aluminum is lighter (more payload), doesn't rust, and is a smart choice for Florida coastal work. Steel is heavier but tougher against impact damage — better for hauling rocks, debris, and heavy commercial materials. We'll recommend based on what you're hauling.
What add-ons should I think about?
Common dump body add-ons include underbody toolboxes, headboards/cab guards, tarp systems (manual or automatic), LED work lights, pintle hitches for towing trailers, and high-side extensions if you haul lighter materials. Tell us what you're hauling and we'll suggest what makes sense.
